Vitamin B-12 (Cyanocobalamin) is a water soluble vitamin necessary for the maintenance of a healthy nervous system and for the metabolic utilization of fats and proteins. Vitamin B-12 is also essential for the synthesis of DNA during cell division and therefore is especially important for rapidly multiplying cells, such as blood cells. In addition, adequate intake of Vitamin B-12, along with Folic Acid and Vitamin B-6, encourages healthy serum homocysteine levels, thereby supporting cardiovascular health.*

Immune Deficiency Foundation Donation – Necklace 2

Immune Deficiency Foundation Donation - Necklace 2
My 17 year old niece, Kaitlyn, suffers from a primary immunodeficiency disease known as Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID). She takes weekly IV treaments of a plasma donated product, which is necessary for her survival. There is currently no cure for CVID.

Kaitlyn serves on the National IDF Teen Council and speaks to other patients and industry people about her disease and how it affects her life.

For the past few years, it has been my honor to participate in the national IDF conventions by creating and donating several necklaces to be auctioned to the higest bidder.

The mascot/logo for the foundation is the zebra in colors of green and black because, in medical school, doctors learn that "when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras." Sometimes physicians need to look for a zebra. Primary immunodeficiency patients are the zebras of the medical world. So IDF’s mantra is "Think Zebra!"

You can help, too, by donating blood when your local bloodmobile comes around, or visit your local blood bank and give. It truly is the gift of life, as everyone in my family knows.

It takes 45 pints of blood to make one plasma treatment for Kaitlyn.
